College Counseling + Career Guidance in grades 8–11 at Astana Garden International School
The goal of the programme is to help each student identify their interests, strengths and potential areas of development, while building a personalised university admissions strategy. The process begins in grade 8 through a dedicated College Counseling subject and continues until university enrolment.
College Counseling is a key component of education at AGIS, helping students build a conscious and individual pathway toward admission to leading universities around the world. It is not a one-time service provided before applications are submitted, but a long-term, structured process embedded into the school’s educational programme and developed over several years.
Interview preparation

Many universities include interviews as part of the admissions process. AGIS students prepare for this stage in advance through mock interviews and training sessions focused on presenting themselves, their goals and academic interests clearly and confidently.
Extracurricular activities and leadership profile development

World-leading universities evaluate more than grades and examination results — they seek students with initiative, leadership potential, and active engagement. College Counseling at AGIS therefore includes intentional development of a student’s extracurricular profile.

  • Planning participation in projects, Olympiads and competitions;
  • Volunteer work and social initiatives;
  • Participation in school and external clubs and organisations;
  • Development of leadership positions within and beyond the school;
  • Documenting activities for inclusion in university applications.
Scholarships and Financial Aid Support

College counselors help students navigate financial aid opportunities offered both by universities and external foundations or government programmes.

  • Researching scholarship opportunities suited to the student’s profile;
  • Assisting with scholarship applications and supporting documents;
  • Advising on university-specific financial aid policies;
  • Providing information about Kazakhstani government scholarship programmes for study abroad.
Portfolio and application materials preparation

A strong portfolio is one of the key competitive advantages in university admissions. AGIS College counselors support students throughout every stage of portfolio development.

  • Structuring academic and extracurricular achievements;
  • Guidance on personal essays and motivation letters, from initial ideas to final drafts;
  • Preparation of Common App, Coalition App, UCAS and other application platforms;
  • Coordination of recommendation letters from teachers and mentors;
  • Proofreading and reviewing all application materials before submission;
  • Monitoring deadlines and supporting students throughout the application process.
Academic preparation

AGIS provides structured academic preparation designed to support successful admission to international universities. Students receive:

  • Preparation for international examinations such as IELTS and SAT;
  • Academic English classes focused on academic writing skills, personal statements and admissions essays;
  • AP courses in selected subjects with internationally recognised certification upon successful examination results.

Average AGIS graduate results: IELTS — 7.0, SAT — 1320.
University and programme selection

After identifying interests and goals, students begin the process of building a university list. This is a strategic stage that requires in-depth analysis not only of rankings, but also programme specifics, admission requirements, academic culture, and opportunities suitable for each individual student.

  • Analysis of the student’s profile in relation to university requirements;
  • Creation of a balanced university list including reach, target and safety options;
  • Research into academic programmes and specialisations;
  • Comparison of admission requirements for international students;
  • Monitoring university deadlines and application requirements.
Career Guidance and Self-Discovery

Before choosing a university, students must first understand themselves. College Counseling begins with career guidance and self-discovery, helping students explore their interests, values and academic strengths while introducing them to professions and pathways they may not yet have considered.

  • Individual consultations with a college counselor;
  • Assessment of interests, aptitudes and academic profile;
  • Introduction to academic fields and professional pathways;
  • Discussions of personal goals and long-term educational plans;
  • Understanding the connection between school subjects and future career choices.
